Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
